I’m not really that big into the “floppy” comic books. A large part of that would be growing up in a town where the comic book shop was far away from my house. Additionally, the first time I did go into the comic shop, it was full of smoke and a buncha sweaty guys playin’ Magic. I’ve been into better comic shops since then, but I think the overall feeling still applied.
I first saw Amanda Conner’s art when my husband James started picking up the Wednesday comics run. Overall, Wednesday comics seemed pretty cool, I’m probably saying that more because it’s over, but I got the most attached to Conner’s story about Supergirl trying to get the Superpets to stop running amuck in the city. Her cartoony-yet-still-normally-proportional-style and facial expressions get me excited for her comics. My favorite part of her comics are the little background details and sight-gags that she’ll slip in, like a dog peeing on an alien’s spaceship a few panels after it crash lands, or just the funny stuff sitting around someone’s apartment. By the time she started drawing Powergirl, I was an official Amanda Conner fan-girl. I got excited each month when James would come home with his stack of comics and I would nab the Powergirl issue and scurry off with it to read.
Her attention to detail and visual humor is probably best summed up in the cover for the first issue of the mini-series Girl Comics which features She-Hulk arm wrestling Iron Man. If that’s all you told me about the image, I would already be sold. Conner brings even more into it with the visual gags that tell so much of an untold story. Favorite part would have to be Wolverine handing over bet money to Storm.
So once I found out that Conner was going to be at C2E2, James and I made a point to wait as long as possible to pick up some of her art and thank her. She was super nice despite having one of the longest lines at the Artist Alley. She was still very friendly by the time we got up to talk to her.
Conner also had a Supergirl print for sale with the Superpets that was uber cute. I’ve never been too big on Supergirl, but the story from Wednesday comics got me excited for both her and the super-strong pets. Highlight on this for me is the crazy-shredded kitty-tower. We also picked up her sketchbook, an awesome pick that showcased her pencils as well as some fun inked pieces. My camera is less than steller unfortunately and does not do this swag justice.
The last issue of Powergirl that Conner will be working on comes out in a month and it made me realize I didn’t really have any other comic books that I would be looking forward to. So now comes the point where I start digging around online for her graphic novels to catch up on. Hopefully DC will do a Supergirl run with Conner and give me a reason to run to the comic shop again like a silly fan-girl.
